Is there any insurance policy to cover our short term or temporary medical conditions that are curable? I've heard about the Private medical insurance, but I'm not sure of it's benefits.

For short-term health conditions it is better to get a short-term health insurance. it provides you coverage for limited period of time and protects you against any unforeseen illness or accident.

Hi Penelope,
Short term health insurance plans are good when you are between jobs or when you are waiting for any group policy to take over. As far as I know, you would not qualify for a short term health plan if you have a pre-existing condition. Ask your agent or benefits advisor about how an insurance company would define pre-existing condition. This definition may vary from one company to another. You may also consult your benefits advisor or agent to know about how you will be covered under such a policy.
If you already have a current employer provided health plan, you may be able to extend it to cover your condition through COBRA.
If you have pre-existing condition you must look out for HIPAA, which is expensive but covers pre-existing conditions.

Please keep in mind that HIPAA has nothing to do with being "expensive." HIPAA is simply the mechanism by which an insured receives credit for prior health insurance coverage and how that affects an insurers ability to exclude for preexisting conditions.

Thanks InsTeacher :). I tried to mean that a health insurance conforming to HIPAA rules may be expensive compared to a regular policy.

Private Medical insurance could definitely be a good choice. It pays for the accommodation costs of specialist surgeons. It also pays for nursing within a pvt. hospital or NHS hospital ward. Policies under PMI could be categorized under comprehensive and standard.

PMI policies are sometimes truly beneficial for us. Generally such policies wouldn't cover you for any incurable critical illness or chronic disease. Asthma, a certain type of sclerosis and diabetes would fall into this category.
Under specific circumstances, these policies will also reimburse you for the health care costs to get you back to your original health condition.

Hi,
Read out the PMI exclusions very carefully-
* Dental care
* HIV/AIDS
* Risky sports
* Natural pregnancy
* Overseas hospitalization
* Cosmetic treatment
* Drug/alcohol abuse

It is also difficult to know which Private Medical Insurance suits you with so many companies offering PMI. It might be worth talking to an independent financial adviser who would help you see the differences between the policies.

A Moratorium is a good way of starting a PMI coverage. All pre-exisiting conditions stretching back to 5 years and counting on a period of 24 months (consecutively) would be excluded and no treatment would be covered during that period. All listed health conditions would be covered beyond this given period.
