What do you want to know? Who was their insurance company? Have they paid the claim? Because I KNOW you aren't asking total strangers to just send money somewhere....What can we help you with? Please be as specific as you can.

What exactly would you like to know from us? If the couple have home insurance policy they should turn the claim to their insurer.
The homeowners insurance policy covers the damaged caused to the dwelling by fire or smoke. However while dealing with the insurance company, you are required to keep the following in mind, it'd make it easy to deal with the adjusters..
Ask the insurance company to make an advance on your claim. This would cover the costs of the items that you might need in your daily life. And this can be done even before the insurance adjuster look into the matter.
The insurer may also offer coverage for the temporary dwelling; that is if you are forced to stay in a hotel during the repair, you may receive compensation for the hotel bills.
The homeowner should also take the steps to prevent the house from further damages, ie you are required to take the necessary steps to mitigate damages.
Its very important to file the claim at your earliest. You need to inform the agent and the insurance company by calling them up. And at the same time you should prepare a list of the items that you have lost in the fire.

Well, that means a year ago.
If your claim wasn't handled properly then you are required to check out with the insurer about your claim's status. The insurance company is required to act promptly with the claims and if they are delaying it without any proper cause then you are required to write to them along with marking a copy to the Department of Insurance of your state.
The insurance company is also required to state the reason in writing if it denies a claim. Make sure that you receive the document stating the proper reason.
