It's good to know that you're planning to work from home and there's nothing like it if you work successfully. To tell you the truth home insurance is a must for all of us. All you can do now is to think of adding a home business insurance to your coverage.

Hi Robby,

It's true that you could add home business insurance to your insurance kit. It becomes important as your home insurance won't cover for the equipments that you use for business purposes.

At the same time, it's important to know that you won't need the entire business insurance coverage, since you'd be operating from home. So, you'd need to study all the policy options that are being offered to you to know what suits your needs.

Home business insurance is a bit different than your home insurance. Under this insurance, you can't only cover for your own equipments, you'd also need to cover for other equipments that lie within your premises. This coverage would be there for the entire life of the policy.

Working from home and running a business in your home might be two different things. I work from home but my company owns the equipment I use and I don't keep products in my home. So I don't need any other type of insurance. My property is the same and I have no additional exposure by simply sitting in my house rather then an office.

Tcope is right on, working from home as an employee vs. running your own business out of your home are very different insurance exposures.
If you are working from home for your employer it will depend largely on what kind of work you do. Most home policies will have a limit on damage to property (computers, etc) used "at any time or in any manner for any business purpose" So if you use equipment you own in your work you may have an exposure there.
On the liability side, it is possible but not certain that your employer's policy would cover you for business related incidents that occur off company property (such as a client meeting you at home being injured or you damaging the property of a client)
You really need to discuss the details of your situation with an insurance agent to determine if you need any additional coverage.

One interesting thing that comes to you under home business insurance will be that specified amount of property coverage which would cover for properties that don't belong to you even when they are placed in your home.
