Do we need a home owners insurance rider to cover expensive jewelry? Will it cover us against theft too?

Yes, if you have more than 1k or so in jewelry or get an inland marine on the pieces. Most HO policys only cover the theft of jewelry up to a certain limit (and it's low) like 1-2k . You will find this limit in your policy look under personal property section. Then work your way toward the perils, you will eventually come to a page that has 'limits' on certain personal property.

We'd often apply for home insurance and then forget to look at the papers after we have them from the carrier. It's natural for us to feel protected till we come across a situation wherein we're required to meet our losses out of pocket. This mostly happens when we ignore the "exclusions" section within our policy papers.

Yes, I believe it's best to get a HO rider for all items that are expensive. You'll surely get a rider to get the equipments covered at your home office as well as to cover your jewelry back home.

It's just not about equipments or jewelry. Different pieces of art works that you may posses are also covered under your home owners insurance. At the same time, you may obtain a rider to achieve additional protection for such works. Believe me, it's not that expensive!
