Hi, I am about to apply for home owners insurance. Please tell me regarding the common problems associated with home owners so that I don't need claim for such hazards. Coloradoblitz

Hi, I won't have any reason to think that the home owners would file any claim unnecessarily. But, I have often seen that the reasons for such claims could have been prevented with a little bit of effort from each one of us. These mistakes would ultimately increase our insurance rates. That is the reason I'd think its better to restrict our premiums through a proper management of our home. Crossbreed

Of course! There are some claims which could be controlled if we want to.
Think of the claims relating to water damages..
We have come across a lot of pipe leaks or expansion of pipes during winter causing cracks. But it is only after the damage has been caused, that it would come to our notice. Don't you all think it is a much better practice if we'd check out these pipes on a daily basis..? If we're gonna wait for a major blow..then we'd surely end up in a mess!
If only during the winter we'd remember to put the thermostat over freezing and have someone to look into it twice a week, then we leave for a cool vacation! Purpleheaded08

We should gets the cords and cables checked every quarter.

Even when we shift in to a new home..we should run a check of whether the new wiring is perfectly in place. There might be little expense (its one time)...but think of the lower rates it could get you as also the necessary safety. It is mostly during festivals eg. Christmas, that we keep the lights on when we're sleeping..and this is quite a known thing for the colder months...but I'd believe its rather wise to keep them off! Roddick

Guys..I believe "burglary" is rather the most important cause over here...and perhaps we're missing out on that!
Burglars may not only cause considerable damage to our assets but also to our beloved family members.

If we'd just be a little more careful about closing our windows and checking the security systems on a regular basis..it could certain save us a few precious lives as also our insurance rates. Even an auto-light system would just keep the burglars at bay and they would quite be in the dark regarding your presence at home. Caromel_merquez

Friend, if your home is well maintained you may receive lower quotes from the insurance company. Hence, maintenance is a primary factor both to ensure your peace of mind and lower premium. Many insurers offer discounts for home improvements. Hence, plumbing and wiring updates can also help in saving on the HO policy.

Installing anti burglary system is certainly a way to go but and along with that the homeowners should also install smoke detector and fire extinguisher to reduce the chances of damages from fire.

I think focusing on the positive things that you can do in your home to reduce costs is the way to go. Installing a home security system usually helps reduce the cost of your home insurance. Make sure that you let your agent know what type of security system you have in your home(monitored or unmonitored) as that may make a difference in your discount. Also check with your insurance agent to see what other additions you can do in order to reduce your rates(exp. fire alarms, non-smoking residents, etc...)
