You posted this in the auto form.

HO is not mandated by the state (I can own a home and not insure it)... so their would be no minimum limit imposed by them.

Hello Elegant,

Unlike auto liability coverage, homeowners liability hasn't been mandated by the state. Therefore, you can continue owning a home without carrying HO insurance.

Now, if you can give us a little background about your reason for asking, we can give better replies to you.

Did someone get hurt on your property? Or is it that you're trying to get a fair measure of your risk?

I got hurt on someone elses property, they have liability insurance and property insurance. when it comes to settling the claim I'm not sure what would be a fair settlement. The injury is a 2nd degree burn which resulting in a permanent scarring to my breast and a small 2nd degree burn to my left leg. :(

Okay Ddee, thanks for the updates. Now, I hope that you have turned the claim to their homeowner insurer.

>> How much have you accumulated so far on medical bills?

>>Are you still receiving treatment?

>> Are you also planning for plastic surgery to remove the scar?

Hope you would reply us back soon.

ddee --ouch! :(

I've personally never seen an HO policy with less than 100k in liability. I think that is pretty much standard. But I've also not seen a CA HO policy either

The limit of liability coverage of course doesn't mean it's an automatic payment. Has the HO company assumed liability? What did the homeowner do that was negligent? Being injured on someones property does not automatically make them liable for your injury.

All HO policys I've seen also have medpay coverage, the limit is much lower, usuall 1-10k.. no negligence needs to be commited to collect on medpay, simply have to be on that persons property. Has the HO carrier/adjuster paid out the medpay limit?

There is no such law which mandates Home Insurance. You can buy a home and stay without the insurance, Now you do have to undergo certification and inspection in term of construction aspects to make sure your home is dwellable.

But these inspection and certification doesnot guarantee that your home will survive a calamity like flood and quakes, fires etc

If you have your own home, i would surely suggest buying a policy not full coverage but minimum to protect your self. You dont want your life time saving go down the drain in one natural/man made disaster.

Home Insurance would cost you around $400-500 a year if I am not wrong in most of the states. Its hardly 40 - 50 bucks a month .

Hello Design, you are correct that no homeowner insurance is required to buy and live in a house. However, the OP here is inquiring about homeowners liability coverage and not about standard homeowners policy since she has suffered injuries at other's premises.

I'm sure you'd need to do a proper estimation of your damages before you forward your claim.
If you're the one who got hurt why's it that you wanna know the minimum liability limit on home owners?

Did your doctor tell you regarding any possible complications that may arise in the future?

I don't know where you live design, but in my part of the world, I pay about three times that much!
