Roofing Insurance Claims -

I searched this forum and have found some great info for situation similar to my own. Smile

But I would like to go ahead and share my question and see if I can get a definitive answer.

I made a claim for roof damage due to hail and the ins adjuster came out and inspected everything. He submitted the claim and I received a check, in less than a week, for a new roof minus the deductible.

I do not believe the roof needs to be fully replaced, looks to be some shingle repair at the most, just replaced in 2003. We are going to get some estimates regardless.

Question is, will it be OK to simply not get the repairs done, or is that in some way illegal. I am not into committing ins fraud but I honestly do not think there is too much damage. Confused I would probably fix some of the damage myself and do some other work on the house.

Also the check does have the mortgage companies name on it to so I do not know if they will need to be involved.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks

Its unethical, but not illegal. Once the roof damage insurance claim check is awarded, though it's officially given to repair the damages, the claimant can use the check for almost anything. It won't remain a concern of the insurance company anymore.

Just be sure that you can't claim twice for the same damages. and if you do so it'll then be regarded as a fraud.

Hope that clarifies.

Hi frequency, welcome to ampminsure. You might have got the idea already that you can avoid fixing the roof in accordance with the insurance company, if you want so. But remember that its your dwelling and also you may be still answerable to the mortgage company It may also affect the future price of the property. Hence, leaving the damages un-repaired may not be the best solution for you.

However, you can contact another contractor, who can do the same job at a lower price, if you don't want to spend the entire claim check on the repair work. Also you may wish to negotiate to fix only a certain portion/layer of the roof instead of repairing the entire ceiling.

Thanks,
Carol

I disagree that it's unethical...it's not nor is it fraud or illegal...You can do whatever you want with that money...that your lein holder will allow that is...and yes, you will have to discuss it with them, and come to an agreement about their endorcement...

If there would be another hail storm and the roof has not been replaced, then your carrier of course will not pay it again, (as they would if you did replace it)...This happens all the time...there is not a thing wrong with it...

I agree with Lori. It's your house. You can do what you want with the money.

Thanks for all the responses...

Contacted the mortgage co and they said that since it is under 10k all we need to do is send the check and estimate in and they will endorse it and send it back. We also asked if there was anything else that needs to be done after we get the check back and they said there is not. I guess they don't regulate these things if the amount is <10k.

I plan on getting a contractor to come and take a look at the roof. I believe and hope that it just needs to be partially fixed, but if it needs to be replaced I will do so.

I am thinking that the roof contractors will try to tell me that the roof needs to be replaced regardless just to get a bigger job, but I am going to be present when they come to do the estimate to see what they say. I not familiar with roofing co., do they also just fix the roof partially or only replace the entire roof?

A good honest roofing contractor will tell you that all you need is a partial repair job, if that is indeed what is needed...Personally were it me, when I called them (I'd get bids from atleast three)...I would tell them, 'I think we can repair this, or do a partial replacement, I really prefer not to replace then entire roof if that is possible'' that way you should know at the front end if they do not do this...also remember...don't pay more than half until it's done, and don't do that till they are there and ready to work...it's a good idea to get referals from people you know that have had roofing work done.

Better define 'indian' cause that could be two different nationalities and I'd sure hate to get your bigotry confused...course we all know that ALL white people rip you off, and of course we KNOW that the roofer in this thread just HAD to be white right? Please do enlighten us as to 'which' ''indian'' you are refering? Native 'indians' or folks from India?

I'm curious to know what has made our guest to make such a comment.

What document does he have in support of his comment? If this is a fact then henceforth we can suggest only Indian contractors to our visitors :D
