Has anyone needed to put in a claim for environmental contamination from an old oil tank leak on their property using their existing homeowners policy in the state of Massachusetts? Is this always probability covered by an insurance underwriter or do you have to state specifically that you want that type of insurance in your policy?

I guess it'd depend upon the insurer in question. The policy issued by an insurer has some basic features which apply to all situations. I'm not aware of a plan that would add a specific peril that's only relevant to the particular locality. You may wish to discuss the issue with your agent to know better.

Hi Francine, as far I know damages caused by pollution or environmental contamination is an excluded peril under the most homeowners policy. You may have to check with the policy document to know whether its cover or excluded in your plan.
