I have been an adjuster for 16 years. The first 2 years were very slow. I had a second job (and would recommend that for new adjusters that want to do CAT only). It seemed to me that 90% of the work was going to the "old timers". ALL
adjusters are paid the same. A new guy just that just got his/her license makes the SAME as the guy/girl that has 20 years experience. So of course, when the
IA's have a chance to pick experienced over non-experience, they will. The more the independent makes, the more the IA company makes, the happier the
insurance company is. So the key is to get as much work as you can. Take the
jobs that are 1000 miles away and only last 1 week. Once you have a few years behind you, then you will be on the top of the IA's companies list to be called.
After about 3 years I was making about $250k per year, working 8-9 months of the year. My expenses were $100k. The most I made was Katrina...I reported
$330k that year and only $70k in expenses (I had a RV for that storm and that was a lot cheaper than hotel ($30 a night vs $100 a night)). For the last few years, I have been wanting to spend more time at home and turn down a lot of
storms. I made $115k in 2012 and will have about $14k in expenses. New guys will hear a lot of negative stuff from the experienced guys. Be prepared for it.
