I must say that its a very gallant attempt for an one year old agent to leave the sanctuary of captive agency and move into the field of independent agents.
Anyway, have you evaluated with the prospect of becoming an independent agent with your current employer?

i'm currently with a captive financial company that only do term life insurance. and i found that not much people like term insurance and from that, i'm losing a lot of business. so that is why i'm thinking about going work for an independent broker. is that a good idea?

Certainly its a good idea. And I bet that all the insurance agents like to become independent at some point of their career.
You an check out with the insurance job sites for the job openings. Also, start contacting the insurance company representatives about getting appointed by them. Your job would be to convince them that you can produce sufficient business to keep the agency running. And, for that you may need a business plan. Hence, carefully develop a business plan to show them that you are capable of making money.
Hope this helps. We have got couple of great insurance agents in the board, they may also come forward to your rescue. So, just hang tight.

yeah, Jeremy is right...its pays to have a realistic business plan available while visiting the office of the insurer. This would impress them undoubtedly.
Also, exploit the connections that you have in the industry. If you are pally with some of the agents of the same field, you may like to use their references to get the first appointment. Its always hard to get the first appointment, but after that if you are good you can add more and more companies to your kitty.

Hey ekr,
What you need to look at are FMOs. (field marketing organizations). Most of them have many carriers and I would shop them for the best commissions. Their main purpose is to handle the contracting paperwork and product training for the carriers. For life products I like pip1.com (premeire insurance partners)
I am currently using three different ones for three different types of insurance. One for health ins, one for life and final expense, and one for medicare suppliment and long term care.
