I worked in the home office of a life insurance company for almost ten years and loved the business. After fifteen years away from the field I am now a property and casualty agent with an independent agency. I would like to link up to some experienced P & C agents on this site to learn more through their knowledge. Anyone qualifying???

Right now I am basically trying to "learn" all I can about homeowners/dwelling policies that we sell so that I can be confident in what I tell a customer.

It's not to difficult, start by learning the basics of the HO (Primary residence) policies and the DP policies (non owner occupied residence - also know as rental unit 1-4 unit max). Once you know the difference they are easy to understand and sell. You need to then break it down by coverage form basic, broad, and special. Always know what perils are covered by each form. Once you have that you going to really be able to advise your customers on what they are covered for and what they are not. Always remind them of standard exclusion and additional endorsements they might want to add like Back Up Of Sewer & Drain never sell a homeowners policy without this endorsement unless you have them sign off on a waiver stating they don't want coverage. This will keep you out of an E&O claim because it's a common claim and happens a lot and when you tell them they don't have coverage it won't be pretty if you didn't recommend this to them.
Our blog gives some good coverage uses. I will be adding to this as well so you can keep looking back.

Thanks for your help! I have been studying but for some reason the "named perils" puts questions in my mind for the DP1. A lot of people had been selling it as a basic fire policy but I know that it covers more but just want to have a clear statement of what the others were when I explain it. My manager agrees with you and really tries to put the Back up endorsement on every home owners. We don't do the waiver but that's a good idea. I will start following your blog.
