Claims adjuster and insurance agent: What should I choose?

I took a job as a life and auto insurance agent few months back and I quit immediately after few weeks simply because I hated it extremely. Making cold calls and telling consumers lie every single day just blew off my balls.

I was just wondering if joining an insurance company as a claims agent is any better. I’ve a four year degree but don’t have any license. Can I be one or should I be one? Is it hard?

If you like spending your day on the phone talking to people who are upset because their car is wrecked, their home has been burglarized or burned to the ground, or any of hundreds of other kinds of claims, then you might like that.

Then again, if you don't like lying to people, you might not like it.

What???? That is about 1/3 of it. You also spend each day getting twice as much new work as you started out that day. Every time you do a great job your boss will tell you, it's your job anyway. All this and there are 100 ways you can screw up every day and you will be held accountable for each and every one.

Oh, and your pay is not that great.

To be very frank, if you are looking to make money and not going after charity, you should stick to the role of an insurance agent.

Insurance claims adjusters have a really high burnout rates. And I just wonder how some people carry out their duties for so long span of time. The carriers ask them to work more than 60 hours a week and in spite of this laborious job the clients are never happy. Sorry but this adjustment thing just stinks. It’s a nasty job...can be compared to babysitting!! However, if you still like it, best of luck.

There is a huge difference between being an insurance agent and a claims adjuster.

Being an insurance agent, you are just required to show insurance sales and come up with good numbers at the end of each month. Your income is chiefly based on the sales you make. If you think feasibly, these sales are somehow derived from your potentiality to determine the particular insurance needs of your clients, based on their particular circumstances and financial goals. If you are just trying to sell life insurance in order to make money, you are in the wrong path. Else, you should take care of your clients and your needs will be met.
However, as a claims adjuster, you simply go out, inspect and determine the damage made on the vehicles or property of a claimant, then submit payment to cover said damage, minus deductibles, etc. Nevertheless, being a claims adjuster you need to work more extended hours.

Being an insurance agent is a very reputable profession. However, there are few unscrupulous agents too who can go to any possible extent to get their sales done. An insurance agent should never be a liar because their dishonesty will catch up with them.

Claims adjusters earn a good living, and moreover, their job and stream of income is secure. However, on the other hand, a multi-line agent who sells health, life, home, auto, and business insurance will earn around 4 or 5 times that of an adjuster.

Most important point is that agent is directly related to sales but a claim adjuster has to look after the possible whole scenario like reason of death and if that was covered in the description and the value and he has nothing to do with the sales
