Issues Facing Insurance Agents

Hello,

I'm currently in school studying actuarial science, but will eventually be joining the real world. I think that I'm more interested in sales type work within the insurance industry (rather than actuarial work). I was just hoping that I could get some more clarity about what issues agents - both captive and independant - are facing. I see the various benefits of being an agent, but was hoping to get your insight on the difficulties you're facing. Any and all input is much appreciated!

Hmmmmmm issues?

The biggest "issue" Insurance Agents face are themselves. Just exactly who is stopping any agent from contacting people regarding their products and related services?

Nobody,.... but the agent.

You write your own paycheck is this business and are paid EXACTLY what you are worth.

Selling insurance is simple, but it's not easy.

Most agents are their own #1 problem.

great response gary, I guess you could say that they could be their own worst enemy. Hopefully with good customer service and good reputation an insurance salesman will do one some good.

Hi Insurance Baby, well you picked a good one. I've been both an independent broker and a captive agent. There are pros and cons to both, but overall it is an awesome industry to be a part of. My advise keep doing what your doing and opportunities will arise. As you gain knowledge and experience you will find your niche, and you will know it. The best of luck.

I am about to get appointed with Allstate insurance and I heard they lowered their rates by 14.9%.. anyone heard of that?

Actually, I heard there was a rate increase for Allstate. Where are you going to be appointed? Some of the states for Allstate are not writing property at this time either.

I would agree with Gary.

The biggest "issue" Insurance Agents face are themselves.

In this industry, I believe that self motivation plays an important role for your success. No one can motivate you to work but your self.

Just exactly who is stopping any agent from contacting people regarding their products and related services?

Nobody,.... but the agent.

Gary is right. You have the choice to call your prospect or just stay in one corner waiting for people to ask you about your product. No one can make an agent successful but only himself.

In order to be successful in this business, I think the first issue that you need to face is your self. Be motivated and reach for your goals.

Well insurance baby, obviously you are conducting some survey so that you can make an informed decision as to whether to pursue the career path of an actury since you major in actuarial science or to venture into sales business either as captive or independant agent.

No matter what your choice is going to be, I hope you will love what you do.

If we enjoy what we do, we will give our best. It is your passion that fuels your determination to overcome all the challenges you face in your job or business.

Best wishes.

I talked to many an independent agent and decided to go captive. Fortunately I was able to purchase an agency that was successful, good retention and had an excellent staff. A very seamless transition.

I have had several independent agents speak with me about become a captive agent with my company (in fact, our company offers agent a decent bonus for recruiting - I cashed in a few times  )

You have to look at things with a very business-like approach. Cash flow, ability to pay bills, find a good location, advertising, etc. Even purchashing office furniture, computers, phone lines, - a lot of initial expenses that you won't have if you go captive.

But the advantage of independent is you really are your own boss. That appeals to many people. I think I have the best of both worlds. Yes, I am captive (have to be open certain hours, can only write one company, etc) but they also provide a lot of advertising that would be cost prohibitive if I tried to do the same. Of course, I do have the day to day decision making, choose additional advertising, and as long as I'm doing my job, they leave me alone (lol).

I can talk with you about my companies specifics if you would like - just shoot me a message.
