Auto Insurance Carriers

by mariemerganser » Tue Dec 30, 2008 04:59 pm

We have a failry big health, life and group benefits agency in Florida. We have recently hired a new agent who has worked the P & C side for many years. We figured this would be a great extension to our business considering the book of business we could have him work from and our internet marketing. We have been appointed with three Homeowners carriers but have had no luck finding any auto insurance carriers to write. Can anyone give me some insight into the major auto carriers in Florida and then also tell me which of those carriers may be willing to appoint new agents? Thanks.

I'm sure that the other agents of this board will shortly be around with more names, but to start with, following are the few of the major players of the Florida auto insurance market,

*StateFarm Mutual Auto Insurance Company
*Metlife Auto and Home
*Allstate and Allstate Floridian

Two more are- Geico and Florida FarmBureau. You may check out with them as well. The geico referral program is truly beneficial for its employees.

I totally understand the problem. The first question that most P&C carriers will ask is - "How big is your block of business?"

Larger carriers like, The Hartford, Safeco, Grange, etc. will not even talk with you unless you have a block of P&C business in excess of $500,000.

I would not waste my time on the larger carriers.

Have you contacted Progressive? I have no idea how their rates stack up in Florida, but in a lot of states they are very competitive. They have "preferred" programs, as well as, "non-standard".

Another good company is MetLife Auto & Home. They aren't usually too particular about your current block of business. This is a "preferred only" carrier, but if a person fits, they have an excellent program and very good rates.

A good non-standard company is Infinity. I have no idea if they are even available in Florida, but all you have to do is check the web site.

Hope these suggestions are helpful.

Good Luck!

P.S. If you will start a blog here, you can promote your agency online for free.
