I know of few agents who have started their career as captive agent but later moved on with their own agencies. Starting as a captive agent may help one who is starting-out as a fresher. This way you would receive the initial guidance and time to build you book of business. Once you find your place in the highly competitive profession of insurance agents, start independent agency to capitalize on earned experience.

If you are a captive agent with a company, typically you will not own your book or block of business you develop. In addition, your products to sell will be limited to the products that the particular company sells.
