localatina, it's common for an agency to get a new agent excited about the magnificent wealth and riches of the financial services industry only to have them become disappointed because:
Selling insurance is simple, but it's not easy.
The "best" leads are going to be the ones you generate from your own efforts from the initial contact to policy delivery.
Only the agent can determine what those efforts are going to be.
The most successful agents are the ones who continuously make new contacts with people who they suspect need their products or services.
That's the botton line in this business.
Have your husband read THIS thread describing my reasonable approach to having a success in this business.

I agree with Gary, selling insurance has never been very easy. Your husband is going through the phase that every insurance agent has to experience, once atleast, in his/her career :D
He needs to start generating his own business rather than depending upon the leads given to him. He may concentrate on his existing lead base and try to generate business out of it. References from the existing clients have always remained the best source of getting new businesses for the agents.

Juanita

Well, localatina, I believe your husband needs to be little patient. Frustration is bound to come with time, but the person needs to fight it off.
Selling in most cases is a psychological game. I agree with the other posters, he should try to generate his own business prospects. He has to put little more effort towards getting new contacts and also needs to be more systematic in his methods.
If he wants to go independent with time, it's the right time to start laying the foundation stones for it.

I agree with the other posters. He should generate his own leads and referrals. ALso he could try to purchase leads?

Hello Localatina, I recently found a website that will send an email to anyone in your area. This company sets up an email for you with various stencils and sends your information to opt in email addresses in your zip code area. It seems interesting. If it works or not is another story. I have not tried it yet as I just found it. The link is below if you are interested.

I just checked it out. It looks nice. I couldn't figure out what the fees were.

When I did some more research I found out that they charge 5 cents per email. Which is not too bad, however.....when you do go into the site and want to target a zip code close to your house there may be 4000 emails in that area. I tried to do 10 dollars worth (200 email addresses) for a test and it did not allow me to just do 200. I had to do the full 4000. So I am looking for a zip codes in my area to only have 200 or less email addresses to send to. If you buy more email addresses they give you a break on the 5 cents an email.
I am still experimenting with this.

All posters on here are correct. Another option for him to use is to get the local business pages and start contacting human resources departments for group business. It worked for a friend of mine...he generated alot of leads this way. Best of luck. :D

I just read Gary's link ... it's blunt but true ... nothing happens unless you make a lot of sales calls. That can be on the phone or in person. I really struggled with that at first. Thankfully I now receive most of my business through referrals - but it took me 8 years to get to this point.
You can help your husband by reading about selling together and practicing what he should say. It feels stupid, but the more he practices his sales talk with you the better he will do in real calls.
Insurance is a profession - but it's mainly a sales job in the first five years.
He needs to set a goal for each day of how many people to contact. It should be at least 20 real contacts with genuine discussions.
