There is no specific qualification required to become an underwriter, different companies have their own sets of requirements for the job of underwriting. However, a degree in finance or management might have helped, although not mandatory. Insurance companies mainly value the candidates experience and knowledge about the insurance industry. Anyways, while being an underwriter you will be provided with on the job training, which may include- study of the claim files, comparative study of different insurance policies, learning the process of computing the risk involved in offering a policy to the prospective client, so on and so forth.

Being an underwriter is quite a rewarding career. It is mainly for the people who love analyzing and evaluating factors, and meticulous in nature. Although, a graduate degree in any field may help but the insurance companies show preference to people with degree in business administration or finance with knowledge of accounting. For life insurance underwriting a degree in science or biology may add some value to your profile too.
In the beginning, you will be appointed as a trainee underwriter and will receive training under the senior underwriters of the company. Some companies may also require you to undergo their specially designed training program and qualify the test before induction.
One last thing to add, most of the underwriting works now-a-days are done through computer software, therefore, knowledge in computer is a must for underwriting jobs.
Wish you all the luck for your future. Fatman

Yeah friends, you all are quite right. I just want to add a little in my own way. Insurance underwriting is a very dynamic career. Being an underwriter you are required to upgrade yourself constantly with the new policies and technologies of underwriting. Computers are now used widely in case of underwriting and no doubt t had helped the underwriters to manage the risks in a better way. Therefore, you are required to learn the computer applications used for the underwriting purposes. underwritingwiz

I started my career being an underwriter. I have a BA in a non-finance field, and had been working for a tech firm prior to then, just a couple years after I had graduated from college. When I got hired as an underwriter, I could barely decipher my own personal auto policy! But all of that came in due time. The company was looking for detail-oriented problem solvers with a sales aptitude. Anyone can learn insurance, but it takes someone with a can-do attitude, solid communication skills and computer prowess to be a good underwriter. :) Underwriting is a great "foot in the door" to other insurance careers, as well.
