The world is a big place... you may want to narrow the area down just a little.

The career of an insurance sales agent may allure many, but it requires proper planning at the same time. Obtaining the license is the first step of becoming an agent, but even before that you are required to decide the line of insurance you want to continue with. The agent has to satisfy different licensing requirements for the different lines of insurance. Although the licensing process may vary, but most states require the aspiring agent to complete the pre-licensing courses to pass the state licensing exam.
The pre-licensing course comprises of insurance fundamentals and insurance laws. You may inquire with the State Department of Insurance for further information.

I agree with jeorge, the career of an insurance agent requires proper planning.
Many insurance companies now prefer to hire graduates for the position of an insurance agent. A degree in business or economics may give you an edge over the others in this profile. High school graduates with a flair for sales can be recruited as well, but most often they are hired as the customer care representatives for the companies and gradually get promoted to the position of an agent.

In line with the above discussion I'd like to mention that its also very important for the aspirant to decide whether he/she would like to become an independent agent or captive.
The independent agents run their agencies independently and can trade with more than one insurance company at the same time. The captive agent works as an employee of the insurance company.
In the profession of insurance agents the success largely depends upon the intrinsic individual abilities. Obtaining the license and securing an employment with an insurance company don't ensure success for the agents.
An agent has to work continuously towards attaining success and for that its important that you keep yourself updated with the trends of insurance and finance market.
I'm sure that the experienced insurance agents of this board will also add their valuable inputs in this discussion.

Juanita

Each State is different on what you need to do, first I would find your states insurance website and most of the information on getting licensed should be on there. Like places to go to get testing supplies, or places to go to insurance school. As well as they'll have information on how much you have to study as well.
Also I would look for an Insurance company that you want to work for because they might be able to help you find all the information you need in one quick swoop.
