You should start by finding yourself an employment with an insurance company.
An insurance agent can either choose to become independent agent or a captive one.
The independent agent may choose to work for several insurance companies and may run his own agency independently. The captive agents are the in-house employees of the insurance company and are allowed to sell the products of his employer.
However, if my opinion is sought then I'd suggest that you should try becoming a captive agent at the first and once you manage enough experience in this field, you can move to operate as an independent agent.

strikenlite29, welcome to the forums and congratulations on your success.
The profession of insurance agents is lucrative but requires hard work and dedication. Where there are loads of successful agents, there are many unsuccessful too. However, my objective is not to demoralize you.
I agree with the advice given to you by Jeremy, you need to get yourself associated with an insurance company. I'd rather suggest that you try to find out the prospect of becoming an agent from the performing agents in your area. Some big agencies may hire trainees at their offices. It can give your career a good start.
Also, start telling people that you have obtained the license for selling insurance policies. The friends, family and relatives may become your first line of customer. The business of insurance is all about building network.

I disagree that you should start out by selling policies to all of your friends and family. My reasoning behind this is that as a new agent you dont yet have the product knowledge to know absolutely for sure that you are doing the right for your family and friends. If something comes up wrong your name becomes mud to the people you are close to. I have seen this happen many times.
Hone your sales and maketing skills using leads you buy or develop.
Find an agency that you are comfortable with, if you decide to go captive check out the agencies reputation out before you sign anything.

All good advice. Just because you have a license doesn't mean you can just ...start. You have to be "hired" by someone to sell their (or many companies) product(s).
If you want to work commission only, most anybody would bring you on. Follow box's advice - check out the reputation of the company/agent before signing on. You want someone with integrity and who has respect among other agents - not to mention around town.

You should find a company that trains and might provide leads. After you get your feet wet the industry will come naturally. Take on a couple products and see what you think. We have a product 100% over the phone if interested.

Stay away from Primerica, American Income Life, and Americo. NY Life and Guardian have great training programs, Allianz, and Aviva have a better-than-average training program and superior products.
