President Barack Obama signed legislation yesterday to expand SCHIP coverage to 4 million additional children. Obama will pay for the plan by raising the federal tobacco tax .62 to $1.01 per pack.
What are any thoughts on the new SCHIP law? How will this affect the Health Insurance industry? Will Agents be in greater demand to service the new consumers? If so, what education or training are required for Agents to sell plans through SCHIP? Will this new legislation pave the way for Obama to pass his promised Health Care Reform in his first term?

To me its a good move by the newly elected President. He is trying to keep the mood "changes have come" going. However, the new changes in the SCHIP plans would cover 7.4 million more children who were left out of the coverage net for the income qualifying criteria.

My thoughts are 'well crap, it really sucks for us smokers' i know i know i need to quit anyway...but damn, did this also hit the 'smokeless' tobacco users? (i don't know i'm asking)....i frankly don't agree with any 'sin tax'...period...i don't drink and i wouldn't agree with that either, i'm not fat and wouldn't agree with big macs being thriple taxed either....For the babies...you bet i'm right there with ya'...just seems like an odd way to get the money...also what happens if many smokers do quit because of this...where's the money going to come from to fund (the already in place) program?

I think that in order for the cigarette tax to be increased fairly, the proceeds should go to helping the costs that uninsured smokers are causing. I do think the SCHIP program has a lot of potential, it just needs to be run properly!
