Hi Keller,

Pennsylvania is a "Thompson-Prometric" insurance testing state, commonly called just "Prometric." This is the testing company that the PA. department of insurance has contracted with to test insurnace licensing candidates.

We have a great deal of familiarity with Prometric, and my company does business in PA with a prelicensing program. You shouldn't pay more than about $150.00 for your training, which does not include your state application or licensing fees.

If you're interested, I can point you in the right direction. I just happen to run an insurance training company considered the best in the industry. In fact, we have the highest pass rate in the entire Prometric domain, and I have stats to back this up! :!: I will never push my company's agenda in this forum, but I'm happy to show you the way to go. :D

Would be much better if you'd give us a hint as to which place you belong to. Apart from that I'd like to know about your qualifications and field of interest.

For 40 years I have worked as a paralegal in a personal injury law firm. What kind of classes would I be required to take to become an agent, what kind of test?

Your paralegal experience is of no importance when it comes to being licensed as an insurance producer (although it could help you when it comes to answering questions concerning state insurance laws).

You don't indicate in which state you will be a resident producer, so it is not possible to answer your question with any specificity. Each state has its own licensing requirements, many of which include a prelicensing course of varying length. California's is a 52-hour requirement for licensing as a Life & Health Agent (two licenses) or as a Property & Casualty Broker-Agent (two licenses) [92-hours for both sets of licenses -- 12 hours of Code & Ethics, plus 20 hours in each specific insurance licensing category (L-H-P-C)]. Some states, such as Utah, have no educational requirement -- you just have to be able to pass the exam.

What tests are required? What are the costs? Where do I get learning materials to prepare for tests?

Online courses are available from vendors such as AD Banker & Company, ExamFX, and others. Live classes may be available locally from AD Banker and Kaplan Financial and others. Check the various websites for current costs. Licensing questions can be answered at the PA Dept of Insurance website.
