My question is for the agents of this community. I’m starting off with the agent’s career and am interested in the line of health insurance. I’d like to hear from ya’ll…how do you think that the universal healthcare system would affect the business of health insurance agents? Do you think that at this time of transition a new agent should start-off with the line of health insurance?

One idea with the universal healthcare is to eliminate the underwriting guideline and ensure guaranteed issue for all. Now, if this really happens then I’d assume that agents would get more businesses to write. That instead would benefit them.
I personally don’t feel that business would be scarce for the agents who know this industry for long.

Now Darla, the universal healthcare plan also promises to reduce the cost of healthcare for all. That means lower commission for the agents. The companies will try to eliminate the agents reduce the overhead cost of writing business.
You must have noticed that insurance available online are cheaper than the policies available through the agents, because the agent would deduct a percentage of the premium paid as his commission.
Universal healthcare plan if works as it has promised, then how can you say that it wouldn’t affect the prospects of health agents?

Hi box..
If the agents would be eliminated from the process how would they distribute their products! I don't think all of us would trust the online marketing thing.
If the agent-operations are reduced I could see a fall in bulk-sales all over.

A lot of agents are running around afraid the sky is falling. That is why it is important to diversify NOW. Even if the proposed healthcare reform is passed, it will still not be true universal health care as other countries have. Instead it will end up being a strange hybrid of private and public healthcare.

Box full of rocks... Where are you seeing this? Health insurance is regulated and pricing is the same no matter if you apply direct with the carriers, online, or with an ind agent.

Hey Beatup, what do you think would be the consequences of having a hybrid healthcare system? Would it work more efficiently than the current one?

In my opinion this new system of hybrid participation will be more efficient in nature.
why so??? here are some points to be considered...
1.There will be less expenditure on the advertising as compared to current expenses and thus that amount can be diverted towards the better insurance products (customer centric)
2.Many of the people will get encouragement to go for health insurance (and thus more number of policies) when they see government is playing some role in this.( Uncle SAM you are Great!!)
3.Currently prevailing government schemes related to the health insurance can be wide spread because there will be so many agents who will be promoting that....

I think the agents would get their commission from the carrier. It has got nothing to do with the applicant. The policy should come to an applicant at the same price be it through an agent or applied online.

Guys, don't you think universal health care shows more leads for the health agents!
