My husband and I had been separated for 5 months. He recently died in a car accident. How can I find out if I am still the beneficiary on his life insurance policy? His family refuses to make contact with me. Metlife told me that they do not give out that information. "Beneficiaries will be notified based on information on file." Should I send in a death certificate? The address they have on file is not our marital address, but the address of his parents where he had been currently living. What is the best way of finding out whether I am or I am not? All of his bills are now coming back to me.

Send the death certificate, the company should speak to you if you are the beneficiary. What about the agent? If the check gets cut and goes to you, even if it gets mailed to the parents there's nothing they can do with it.

Don't "send the death certificate" without also submitting a completed claim form. You'll most likely need to include the policy number to avoid having the claim initially rejected as incomplete.
Regardless of who files a death claim, the money will be paid by the insurer to the beneficiary of record. Claim forms normally require the signature of the beneficiary as the claimant. If a person without legal authority (such as a person with power of attorney or otherwise acting as the agent of the beneficiary) makes the claim or forges the signature of the person to whom a claim check has been written in order to cash it, then a crime has probably been committed.
The problem then would be trying to recover the money after being paid by the insurer.
