(oooohoooo rant alert)
Ok, just saw something so appaling I, for the first time I've been a contributor here, feel the need to post it here for all to be made aware.
TV was on just moments ago and CSI was on (I'm not a regular, it was just one and that's what happened to be on). I was admittedly doing something else while it was on, but a certain comment caught my attention.
Cop was questioning someone and made the following comment:
"According to your Will so and so would have been entitled to 100% of your insurance money."
:x :x :x :x :x :x :!:
Really?
I mean really?
I know the writers for these shows aren't exactly geniouses, nor are they usually all that creative, but none of them know of an attorney or insurance agent? Better yet, they can't pick up the g- d- phone and ask someone if that even remotely made sense?
No wonder we get the perpetual question about Wills and life insurance proceeds! Well, that's the way it worked according to CSI, so it must be true. And don't think that doesn't happen, don't even think it for a minute.
I remember being a young agent thinking I wanted anyone and everyone to be my client. Then I matured and realized, nope...not even close.
I remember looking at all the financial literacy marketing and thinking, huh?
I look at the disability insurance forum and let out a hopeless chuckle everyime I go over there. It's mostly filled with people praying they are eligible for unemployment because their disability insurance is about to run out, or vice versa.
We, as a society have failed in so many respects to equip just about every generation with the needed knowledge and skills to look after their own lives. You know why? Because we're too busy worrying about GPA's, soccer games, and what's for dinner. I don't like the insurance or investment guy because he wants to talk about things that make me feel uncomfortable. But maybe, just maybe if we'd take a moment and think about all this, we'd sort at little piece of our life out and make things for the better.
I've always told people you only get one chance to try and get this life thing right. You can make as many excuses as you want about not addressing something, it won't be me who pays for it.
Please, to those who pass upon this forum, and even those who are regular contributors, take a moment. Look over your own plans and ensure that things are correct and where you want them to be.
If you are a professional in the either insurance or investments take a moment and reach out to all your clients on the topic of beneficiary designations for all financial products they may own, life insurance, IRA, 401k, etc. If you've never had the disability, long term care, Roth IRA conversion, etc. etc. etc. conversation bring it up.
Even if you are not an agent, financial advisor, etc. Stick your nose in to those around you. I bet everyone can think of at least one person who they suspect has a glaring issue concerning a component of that individual's financial life. Be creative, but bring their attention to it. Perhaps we should spear head the national "Bring to Someone's Attention Week." Who knows what good you'll accomplish.

So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.

Yes, Chinn, trust your life to God, but at the same time trust that improper beneficiary designations will lead to someone other than intended will get your money.

You're not watching enough TV! You even see speculation on the news about who will and won't get the death benefit in the case of a suicide.

There is probably not a better way to state it. Even though the topic of Beneficiaries is only supposed to take about 15-30 minutes in my insurance classes, I generally spend about an hour on the subject, because it IS one of the least understood topics in life insurance, not just among the general public, but among AGENTS who are supposed to know!!
Failure to understand the importance of beneficiaries, designations, and the need to periodically review them (OK, maybe every year is a bit too often, but why not?) can result in disastrous complications at precisely the time the money that was intended to be paid out is needed most.
Insurance companies cannot make decisions on their own, and will not respond to parties without legal standing, except to say, "You have no legal standing."
So, yes, please PLEASE PLEASE understand that next to figuring out what amount of insurance is proper, this may be the next most important aspect of a life insurance contract.
And while I'm not going to tread on a person's relationship with God, even God Almighty, the Lord Jesus, or the Holy Spirit, whether One, Three, or Three-in-One, cannot change the beneficiary after the insured has died, nor can He tell the insurance company what to do with the money. Possibly the only power God may not actually possess. And I consider Him omnipotent! (I might just have to work that into a sermon one of these days if I get the chance.)
