My son is the sole beneficiary of....a policy owner who recently passed. The owner has once child, a minor (my child is also a minor. 4). The owners family is working diligently to prove that my son is of no relation and is not rightfully owed any $. I am assuming that because my child is legally the beneficiary, whether related to the owner or not, something will be sent to them. Am I correct or terribly wrong? How does this work?

Funds will not be released to a minor. If your son is named as sole beneficiary he's it. You might want to check with an Attorney to help you with the process.

I agree with the above reply, funds are not released to minors. But the family of the deceased might have a strong case, if they have lot of dependents and minor child involved. Their case might be supported by the cause of the deceased's own child's requirements as well as your son being a complete outsider.

I spoke with the insurance company. I was told that funds would be released to my child alone because he is legally the designated benficiary. In the case of the policy owners child, because there is no assignment of benefits for him, he will only receive benefits associated with his fathers passing. Social Security etc, but has no legal right to the life insurance $.

I am still concerned however that for some reason or another, someone will figure out a way to remove my son from getting anything at all.
