My primary checking account was garnished for almost $1600. I just received a life insurance check. Can I deposit this check at another bank and then draw it back out or will the garnishment affect this account at a different bank? I need this money to make up what was garnished.

You can cash the check at your bank, but don't deposit the money there. Then contact the person you owe money to and see if you can agree on a settlement. If you can, then be sure to get them to sign a release of judgment form. You can get that from the court. Without it, you have no proof that the debt was settled.

And you file that form with the court to end all further claims against you in that matter.

Thank you so much, I thought they automatically had to put a hold on the check, but they didn't.
Now I can take care of this mess.
