Who is the policy owner? That's the person who can make changes to the beneficiary. Unless you're talking about a group policy, in which case the insured employee has that privilege.
Depending on the state, you may have already been revoked as the beneficiary the moment your divorce was ruled final. There are now 22 or 23 such states. State laws such as this do not affect employer-sponsored plans under ERISA. If your ex-spouse is the employee, a change of beneficiary is necessary if he/she no longer wants anything to do with you.

You said your ex, that means you are no longer with him. He is the policy owner and he had rights to change the beneficiary name.
