Ex wife as Life insurance beneficiary

by phbrandt » Wed May 27, 2009 05:09 pm

My wife and I are already divorced. She has not re-married, neither has I.
We are in our late 50s. We are on good terms. I want to add her to my life insurance policy as a beneficiary. What information would I need from ex wife, so I can add my ex-wife as beneficiary?

If our company has questions about our SGLI's, we go through our Chain Of Command, who,..then..take the inquiries to our Finance Office ( in this case, our JAG office..told you where they are located). And, again, MY information comes from them. And, AGAIN, the JAG office are the Military experts in Wills, POA's, SGLI, etc. I don't know what to tell you on what YOU say a SGLI should be written, and what the Military says. Everyone has their own opionion.

I'm just telling you the information, given to the Soldiers, of our Battalion ( which is about 600, or so..) by the ones who deal with SGLI. So...if JAG is giving incorrect information, then YOU need to let someone know.

We are letting someone know...YOU. We're taking the time to do this because we care about YOUR KID.

Let me paint a scenario for you. You have died. You are waiting to get into heaven and it is your turn to talk to St. Peter.

St. Peter: I see that you have left a young child behind.

SD Charger: Yes, I love him very much.

St. Peter: Why didn't you provide for him?

SD Charger: I did. He's the contingent beneficiary of my life insurance.

St. Peter: Yes, he is. Why didn't you provide for him?

SD Charger: You mean I didn't leave him enough?

St. Peter: You left him nothing. Weren't you told that the contingent beneficiary gets nothing?

SD Charger: Yes, but the JAG told me that he couldn't be the beneficiary. I named my friend as beneficiary.

St. Peter: So, you left all of your life insurance to your friend and nothing to your child?

SD Charger: JAG told me that I had to do it this way.

St. Peter: You were told that you couldn't leave money for your kid and you chose to believe it? Did anyone tell you differently?

SD Charger: Everyone on a website told me that the money was going to go to my friend and not my kid.

St. Peter: So what happened when you tried to change the beneficiary to your child or to a trust?

SD Charger: I didn't try to do that.

St. Peter: So, you intentionally took care of your friend instead of your child.

SD Charger: Well, uh...

St. Peter: Next

Ah yes....the ignorance of government employees. Man, I can't wait until people like SD have to explain health insurance policies. That'll be fun.

I don't want to offend you, so I won't talk about Heaven any more. Let's paint a different scenario for you.

You are on your death bed. You are having one of your last conversations with Junior.

Junior:I love you so much, Mom.

SD Charger: I love you very much, son.

Junior: Why aren't you leaving any money for me?

SD Charger: I am. You are the contingent beneficiary of my life insurance.

Junior: Yes, I know. Why didn't you provide for me?

SD Charger: You mean I you don't think that I'm leaving you enough?

Junior: You are leaving me nothing. Weren't you told that the contingent beneficiary gets nothing?

SD Charger: Yes, but the JAG told me that you couldn't be the beneficiary. I named my friend as beneficiary.

Junior: So, you left all of your life insurance to your friend and nothing to me?

SD Charger: JAG told me that I had to do it this way.

Junior: You were told that you couldn't leave money for me and you chose to believe it? Did anyone tell you differently?

SD Charger: Everyone on a website told me that the money was going to go to my friend and not to you.

Junior: So what happened when you tried to change the beneficiary to me or to a trust for my benefit?

SD Charger: I didn't try to do that.

Junior: So, you intentionally took care of your friend instead of me? I thought that loved me? What's going to happen to me?

SD Charger: My friend will probably take care of you.

Junior: You mean your married friend who I think is a lesbian.

SD Charger: Yes.

Junior: And if she changes her mind or her husband won't let her?

SD Charger: Well, uh...

Junior: By mom.

What do you expect!!??

Since there are easy ways to make sure that your child legally gets the money, we expect for you to care about him enough to make it happen. I've noticed that whenever somebody points this out to you, you ignore those posts.

Do you care more about your special friend than you kid? Your actions would lead to an affirmative answer to this question.

SD Charger, it's a shame that you are too defensive to realize there are a bunch of people trying to be helpful to you.
