is there a time limit on filing a life insurance claim?

My husband died in 1999 and I was not aware of a life insurance policy that he had until 2 months ago. I need to know if I can still file a claim.

Hi see..

For disability or critical illness I've seen a time frame towards filing claims which is generally 30 days of the policy holder's disability or illness. Some of the policies would extent this time limit till 90 days from the date of disability or critical illness. But believe me I've not heard of such a limit in case of life insurance.

I'm okay with the idea. All I have heard about filing of a life claim by a beneficiary is that the reimbursement procedure may demand the policy-holder's death certificate, the claim form that describes the beneficiary, the age proof as well as the certificate of the physician under who the policy holder was being checked or treated. Thats it!

I'd agree that there is no hard-n-fast time limit for filing such a claim. But would like to add to it that in case you have not claimed it for a long time then you're entitled to recieve the death benefit with the accumulated interest. Hope thats interesting:)

Hi wolfryder70,

I agree with them, there is no time limit in filling a life insurance claim. As long as you have all the requirements upon filling of the claim, the insurance proceeds will be given to you.

in case you have not claimed it for a long time then you're entitled to recieve the death benefit with the accumulated interest.

This is also true. If the insurance proceeds remains on the company for a longer period of time, that proceeds should earn interest. But this may vary on what type of life insurance policy the policyholder have. If the life insurance is a participating plan, then you are in tittled for dividends plus the interest that the dividends earns.

Hi POsaline, were you not explained the coverage by the agent at the time of buying it?

How did you come to know about the coverage now?

I'd be surprised if the claim gets paid after so many years. You certainly have no critical illness condition now.

my son had health insurance through his father that we were unaware of. Can we back file through 2006?

You can try...I actually got our carrier to pay a hospital bill for our daughter that was seven years old..

This will--depending on the coverage--depend in part on either state of federal insurance laws.

It's not out of the question. As Lori has pointed out.
