My mother in law recently passed away. She had a small policy ($10,000) to help pay her funeral costs. We received a letter from the company stating that they were going to decide soon if they were going to pay? Can a life insurance company not pay upon death? Rob

hi,
Well yes it is the auto forum that u have asked a questn about life insurance claim, but that doesnt really matter.... 8)
You havent specified as to who is the beneficiary or the nominee mentioned in the insurance policy. Is this policy you are mentioning a life insurance policy? What are the exact wordings in the letter you have received from the company?
Be assured if everything's in favour and as per TnC there's no way a company can refuse the claim to you.

They are supposed to complete verification report which generally includes
Who is Beneficary
Reason of death
There may be some specific Terms & conditions mentioned in policy document.
if every thing is ok, you will definately get payment

Her death certificate listed various ailments contributing to her death, but also stated that she was an alcoholic? That is what concerns me. My wife is listed as the beneficary.

So your wife is the beneficiary on paper right... but what about the policy what is the coverage for.. and the letter... what reasons does it state for denial of claim?

I do not have the paper with me. My wife stated that the insurance company would make their "decision" soon! I will bring the paperork to work tomorrow. These are great questions.

Hi Robert, have you been provided with the claim forms? I think you are required to fill-in the claim form appropriately along with the documents requested by the insurance company to submit your claim.

IMO they are only reviewing the claim and the letter is an intimation that they have received all that they required to review your claim. Have little patience you may soon hear from them.

Claim procedure includes investigation. Company will ask for few documents of deceased including death certificate.Complete investigation relating to death would happen, like cause of death, medical history, etc. once the are satisfied, proceeds would be handed over to benificiiary or legal heir.
