SGLI dispute

by cmnpayne » Tue Nov 04, 2008 11:11 pm

I am not sure who to contact to dispute my late husband's life insurance. He passed away August 2007 and had changed his beneficiary from me to his dad in May after we had a big fight. The law states that I, as the wife, was supose to be notified, but I never was. His dad did get the money and will not even give a dime to help me raise our 3 kids that he left behind. In his will, he left me everything, but all I got was bills! Can anyone tell me where I go from here?

Usually, the compensation and insurance provided to military veterans are organized by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Anyway, from the beginning of 2007, many US veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars have faced tremendous difficulties in receiving the retirement benefits. I can very well remember that I read an article long before where there was mentioned that someone had waited for 17 long months before he started receiving his checks.

Anyway, today, it is very hard to file claims and get them approved. I just wanted to know if he was mentally retarded at the time of retirement/discharge, then who was there beside him to understand the retirement/disability benefits he was entitled to? Nobody?

In that case, now getting a claim approved would be near to impossible moreover as of the fact that he is no more today.

Let us see what the experts have to say on this…

Sorry, I don't read wing-dings : )
I took the liberty of translating your post though.

To answer your question, he suffered from fibromyalgia, and bipolar disorder. In the last years of his career he was hospitalized for both on several occasions and was taking anti-psychotic meds for his bipolar along with whatever pain treatment he was receiving for his fibromyalgia.
He was a very sick man, mentally and physically. He was hospitalized several times after retirement at the va mental ward also.

This, unfortunately does not change the situation. He did not choose to convert his SGLI to VGLI, he did not pay premiums, and no one will receive an insurance dollar.

Where was his loving and concerned family when he was discharged? They are all lined up following his death.

And MangoQurious . . . your post is almost 100% off target. This has nothing to do with retirement benefits, so why bring up that topic?
