Insurance company wrote and said my mother had a life insurance policy. SHe died 13 years ago and I did not find any policy. My dad is also gone and I am only child. THe insurance company called because they said my mom would have been 100 years and they always try to find family at that age. They managed to find me even after I remarried. Now they want to see her death certificate and fill out lots of paperwork but will not tell me if I am the beneficiary. If I am not the beneficiary, I sure dont want to do all that paperwork for nothing. Why won't they tell me anything?

The insurance company, normally, would contact someone who's the beneficiary of the policy, and since they're contacting you, most likely your name is there as beneficiary. But I won't give you high hopes. It can very well turn out to be otherwise.

However, I'm not sure if you can hold back essential documents, such as -the death certificate, to deprive the beneficiary. Ask the insurance company about the nature of the paper work they need you to complete. What's the name of the insurance company, by the way?

Hey, if you decides not to submit the papers asked the insurnace company, the beneficiary can file a complaint against you with the local police & get your place raided. Think about that!!

I agree with Jeremy, The only way that they can track you down is with your Social Security number. If you think about it, they would have to have that on file for them to find you. And for them to have that on file, you would have most likely been on the policy as a beneficiary.
Just my thoughts.

It does sound kind of fishy to me, if you WERE the beneficiary, it couldn't be that hard for the insurance company to tell you, because they would probably end up telling you anyway. But I would kindly ask them why are they contacting you and not the beneficiary. But i would just go ahead and fill out the paperwork, it couldn't hurt anything, and it could be in your benefit (hopefully it is!)[/i]

Hello Domcha,

I believe that the insurance company cannot tell you over the phone. They must have it in writing and then they will check their documents. Due to the privacy issues they could probably get into trouble if they tell the wrong person. For example if you have the death certificate and find out that you are not the beneficiary, what prevents you from saying that you do not have the death certificate so the real beneficiary does not get paid. So the insurance company first wants to get all the documentation to release the funds then give it to the proper beneficiary.

Thanks, all for your replies. Anyone can get copies of death certificates as they are public record. If the insurance company found a way to contact me they can find the rightful beneficiary if other than myself. I am the only living relative left in my famiy. They have written me again and gave me the number of the policy. It is Metropolitan LIfe. So I will fill out the paperwork (groan) and send it back to them.

Raid my house, eh? That'll be the day!!!

What??? I have never heard of such a thing, and don't believe I ever will. I'm sorry, but this is a ridiculous notion to think that the police will "raid" your place to obtain a death certificate on behalf of an insurance company! While I will be the first to admit that I certainly don't know everything, what you're postulating is absolutely off-the-wall.

The police would not raid your house for a copy of a death certificate! Death certificates are public record! At most you may receive a subpoena to appear in some type of civil action!

I would have thought that the OP parents would have told her if she was the Beneficiary or not. I've heard of scams like this.........Insurance companies getting phone numbers and calling family members, saying the are Beneficiaries of some king of policies. I'm not saying THIS particular issue is one of those scams..I'm just saying to becareful.

OK....so what is the point of the Scam? They did not call me, they wrote a letter. They have sent me a claims form to fill out. I am talking to my attorney tomorrow about this. Very suspicious, if you ask me.
