First off I am very sorry about your mother. Try asking the sister and if she won't give you an answer OR you don't exactly trust her answer call the insurance company and maybe they can answer your question. Usually when someone dies and the insurance companies distributes the money every single individual listed on the policy would be contacted. I am sure in the professional world of insurance they wouldn't just hand everyones money to one person and say "pass this on". Hopefully a quick phone call can get you the answers you need. Good luck

What do mean by getting the money back? Is it regarding a loan that you have forwarded to your mother or its regarding the life insurance policies that your mother had?
Anyways, if you know her insurance agent or the company, you may wish to contact it.

I'm sorry about your mum. Yes, asking your mom's insurance agent (if you know the person i.e) would be the best idea. If you have any idea which insurance company your mom might have purchased the policy from, then contact the company. However, if your mum has mentioned you as beneficiary, the insurance company will definitely contact you when you are entitled to get the money. There isn't any way your sister could change the beneficiary's name without your mum's consent, so don't worry about that :)

If mom had a will then you would KNOW because the attorney or trustee would've contacted you, same with mom's life insurance if you were a beneficary then the ins.company would've paid you direct...
What do you mean you think your sister isn't being dishonest? By that do you mean you think there is money that mom said to divide up and she didn't? Unless there is a rock solid will, as her child you are legally entitled to a portion of her estate...granted it can drag out and cost a few bucks, you always have the option of getting a probate attorney...Did mom have ANYTHING in writing?

Good catch Lori..I had not thought about that. Maybe she had money in some type of checking/savings or elsewhere. Hopefully the poster does come back and clarifies.

Good posts everyone. I would like just a bit more information before I add my 2 cents worth. Let's see if the op answers any of your questions.

I think first of all you should contact the insurance company. Go through all the necessary papers. Then talk to your sister. Still if she doesn't give you the money You can legally file a complaint against your sister.

It would be sad to see it come down to that but hopefully the poster will find another way.
