Are you still in touch with the agent who has sold the policy to you? You can also check with the insurance company's site or put a call to its customer care department. Hope it'd solve the issue for you.
Keep us informed how it went.

We get this all the time, and this could help you out. Go to the following link and it's pretty self explanatory. It'll cost you a few bucks, but they literally have more than 170,000,000 life insurance records on file:

Hi rosie,
What ever related insurance documents you have, use them as the proof and with the help of it, get consulted by particular insurance company. Every insurance company provides the facility where your queries are sorted out.
Hope this will help you.

If you have the policy number and the insurance company name, then just call them.

When it comes to a policy not owned by you but by someone you know..more often do we have relevant information but not exactly the documents that support our claims. Again, in this particular case the OP doesn't even know what kinda policy it is. It's tough but then again there are quite a few ways of going at it-
* You may contact your brother's work place. Official records may sometimes hold such information.
* Go through his address book and see if it has the contact information fo the agent.
MIB could be a good option but then check out their success rate and the associated charges.
