Isn't it true if someone does lie on application and it goes 2 years with out the company catching it they can;t hold it against them. They will also be completely covered. Isn't it true if someone is covered for 2 years and they commit suicide they are also covered.

http://www.insurance.va.gov/sgliSite/handbook/handbookAppend.htm#app_f Well it is a fact and reading over that entire handbook, I really have to say that although; their insurance is cheap, it is definitely not something to have as a stand alone... anyone who has this needs to get their own personal policy on top of it.

jacksonfinancial,

Your link is for TRAUMATIC Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance.

From this link.

What Is TSGLI?

The Traumatic Injury Protection Under Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (TSGLI) program is a rider to Servicemember's Group Life Insurance (SGLI). The TSGLI rider provides for payment to service members who are severely injured (on or off duty) as the result of a traumatic event and suffer a loss that qualifies for payment under TSGLI.

This is the military version of Accidental Death and Dismemberment.

The EXCLUSIONS contained within your link are for the TSGLI rider ONLY.

This is also, no doubt, where some of the confusion lies.

There are alot of 'Sub-Headings' under SGLI. I actually agree with GARY with the above post he made. It can ALL get confusing...even for me. LOL

Well I guess it would be from reading the SGLI handbook and it refrencing the appendix where this was found. I specifically pulled up that handbook and not the TSGLI. I will admit, though, that site is absolutely horror to navigate. I really almost dropped, reading that because of the sheer raunchiness of what I thought it was and how awful I thought it would be to do to service members to exclude all of that but if that is not the case; which I had originally thought it wasn't; they really need to re-do that website because I am certainly not the average bear and if I can make that kind of mistake, no wonder it is a common belief...

Believe it or not ( and I'm SURE you're believe THIS one..) my Unit has handbooks that were last 'copyrighted' in the mid 80's......alot of them NOT updated yet!! Alot of Military website information hasn't been updated in AGES!! Most of the TM's ( Training Manuals ) for the Military vehicles haven't been updated since the Vietnam War.......yep, it's true!! I'm a Military truck driver and a Supply 'specialist' for my unit.

A relative's policy states:

If your death results from suicide or other self-inflicted injury, while sane or insane, 1 and 2 below apply.

1. The amount payable will exclude the amount of your life insurance which has not been continuously in effect for at least two years on the date of your death. In computing the 2 year period, we will include time you were insured under your Employer's coverage under a Group Life Policy.
2. We will refund all premiums paid for that portion of Life Insurance which is excluded from payment under this exclusion.

Is this a standard two year exclusion or something different?

Yup, standard two year suicide clause.

So...a 2 year policy is for 'regular' Life Insurance..not Miltary. (Off the subject, a bit, here..) It's too bad that people have to come to the 'conclusion' to take their own lives. I know situations seem like they will never end..however, there are Counslers, etc., out there to talk to.[/quote]

Some states limit a suicide exclusion to just one year. Colorado also has a statute that says death by suicide while insane is an "accidental death" and would require the insurer to pay even under an accidental death benefit contract or rider.

Question is, other than a person diagnosed as insane just moments before their suicide, how does one prove/disprove a dead person's sanity? Leave it to politicians to write legislation that looks like Swiss cheese, and smells like limburger.
