insuring unoccupied house

My father recently passed away, and myself and two siblings have inherited his house. the existing policy covering the home have just expired, as as none of us are living there at present (although we all go there faitly often to clean up and prepare the house), and we intend to sell the house, the exisitn insurer will not renew the cover.

Is this a fairly standard situation?

Not only is it standard, it's a rule. Whose name is the house under? The carrier will not offer or extend coverage unless it is under your or your siblings name.

I agree with Trench. Plus, you may have some trouble finding coverage as carriers don't really like vacant properties.

the house was my fathers, and since he has died it has now become property of his estate. My brother and I are executors of the estate, not sure if it's been transfered to our names or not.

All three of his children sopend time there but none of us live there permanently.

I think it is standard practice to nonrenew when it is not owner occupied. Have you tried to get a straight "fire policy" with the company who insures your home? We are normally given some leeway as agents to provide coverage for existing clients in these types of circumstances. It would be worth a try. Otherwise, try Foremost, they have a vacant home program
