Retaining your purchase receipts is not always practical. So if a loss happens, you will need to prove that you owned the items though, so you will want to keep an inventory of your contents. An easy way to accomplish this task is to take digital photos, or better yet, a digital recording with your verbal description of each item. The reason I say digital, is it can easily be stored away from your home. Remember, if your home burns down, so will your inventory list if you don’t have it stored offsite.

Always assume no insurance policy will cover everything. There most likely will be caps or possibly even no coverage for items such as money, jewelry, coins, stamps, furs, firearms, and things along those lines. So it is best to ask your agent for a list of the items that are not covered or have a limit to the amount that will be paid for them.
