Required documents for homeowners insurance

For a new homeowners policy, I have given the normal my name, DOB, SSN, address, employment, and all home characteristics. I don't escrow taxes or insurance, or have automatic deduction for my payment. I have given insurance company my mortgage companies name. My ? is now they want the account number, Is this normal and/or safe thing to do and why would they need/require that? thanks.

Who is the insurance company? Many times they are checking to verify if the mortgage is actually yours to make sure no one is trying to open a policy in your name.
