Does my home insurance cover all exterior elements also, that are rather detached from the main house or do need to buy some extra coverage to protect them?

Yes, a standard home insurance policy does cover detached structures of a house. Covered structures may include guest house, garage, swimming pool, shed etc, apart from a limited coverage on landscaping. You can opt to buy an endorsement for additional coverage.

You really need to either read your policy or ask your agent. Policies can differ in this regard. As B mentioned, most property policies will afford some coverage for detached structures but some may not. Some policies will only cover these structures if connected by water or power lines.

tcope, I have never seen the exclusion for detached structures not connected by water & power lines. This would mean a detached shed would not be covered?

Can you elaborate? Do you know which insurance companies have this wording in their homeowners insurance policy?

Over recent years, some of the major insurance companies have been changing policy language in their homeowners insurance policies to limit coverage, and the limitation you mention on detached structures should be a concern for consumers, if it is becoming common place.

The carrier I work for now has this limitation. Its an excess and surplus lines carrier so its uncommon. They added this after so many losses in LA after Katrina.

Again, not a typical exclusion.
