My homeowners insurance company paid he a portion to have a new roof put on my home. This was July 2010. I was still trying to find a roofing company that could do I roof in October. The last of October I had a medical emergency and I had to use the insurance check to pay for the emergency of my health. I never received the other porition of the insurance money due to the fact I could not afford to have a new roof since I had spent the money. Is there anything I can do now? My roof is leaking very badly and I definitely need the roof replaced. Can I change insurance companies and if I do can I file a claim with them to get a new roof? Someone please help!!. I did not want to spend the money, but at the time my health was more important than the roof. I live in South Carolina.

Sure you can... if you don't mind a denial or possible insurance fraud charges.

Seriously... you were paid once for a loss and you now want to be paid again because you spent the money on something else?

Sorry to hear about your illness but you were already paid for the roof loss.

In that you never had the roof repaired and there is more damage occurring, that additional damage won't be covered either. Part of being a home owner means that you need to keep up proper maintenance.

You may want to look into a home equity loan or some other way to pay for minor repairs to the roof.
