Do I need to get estimates for the damage of my house before I report to/claim on my home insurance?

No... unless you think your loss may be under your deductible. Then you might want to.

You can just report your insurer about your suffered damage and the insurer would send you an adjuster to do the estimation.
However, If your damages are minimal and appear to be less than your deductibles as Tcope says, then you may get the estimates and repair the damages yourself without having to file for a claim.

If you have damages and are thinking of filing your insurance claim you most likely have enough damage to constitute the claim. From what I see most of the time even when the insured thinks that the loss is minimal in nature there is often times much more damage that was not known to them. Depending on what is damaged, what may appear to only be a small area becomes a big problem when you can not replace with matching materials.
It is always a good idea to at least call in a good reputable public adjuster in your area as they should be aware of all of the coverages available to you under your policy.
The short answer is No, you do not need to have an estimate prior to filing your claim. Their adjuster will prepare one.
