Power Surge

We were testing our generator to make sure it would work for the upcoming storm. We apparently made an error in wiring it to the house and it caused a power surge - we lost our furnace, dishwasher, washing machine, etc. Will our homeowner's cover this even though it was "our fault."?
Thanks!

If your policy covers power surges on your own property... which very may well not be covered. It's not an intentional act if that if that is what you are asking. You can accidently leave the stove on and burn down the house. That is covered even though its your "fault".

Our firm has handled a number of claims involving damages from generators. Sometimes the generator is defective either because it was constructed in a manner that fostered such a surge or because the warning was inadequate. IF your homeowners policy does not cover it, you might find some success pursuing the manufacturer and seller of the generator. Also, there is a possibility that Federal or state emergency management aid might be available to you if there is a sufficient nexus between the purchase of the generator and a qualifying event (such as Hurricane Sandy). Feel free to contact us to discuss in greater detail

In any case, your insurer will conduct an investigation of its before granting you the compensation.
