A storm caused chips in two or three siding shingles on our house (and a bunch of other damage). Our insurance adjuster's estimate included money to repaint our house. But the amount they listed would barely cover the cost of the paint!
So I asked our adjuster if we were required to paint the house since it was on her estimate. She said "No way! Just have your contractor say you did." When I sounded surprised and concerned, she added "if it makes you feel any better, it'll be your contractor saying it, not you."
Did she encourage me to commit insurance fraud?! Or is this somehow considered standard practice?
And what happens if we don't paint the house, and I'm honest about it? (Because I'm an honest person!)
Thanks!

If they did not pay you enough, fight them on it. Don't let them get away with paying you less than the actual cost of materials. Whether you do the work or not if it is due to you they should pay you properly.
I don't think the insurance company will follow up and ask if you did paint it but if they do I would never intentionally give false information.
