My son recently moved out of state, and lives in a hostel. Will my homeowner's insurance cover his belongings or he needs to buy separate coverage? If so, which coverage would pay for loss of his possessions?

If his change of residence is "permanent", your homeowner's insurance will not cover his property. If he is simply "on vacation" for a few months, then he should be covered. If he wants his own coverage, he would probably need something called "Inland Marine" coverage. If his property cannot be kept under lock and key when he is not present, he will likely find it difficult or impossible to ever collect on a loss.

He's out there for educational purposes. Works part-time though, and has got his own room in hostel.

for educational purposes

If this does not refer to being enrolled in a formal program of education (college, university, trade college, etc), then he needs his own insurance.

He went for his education purpose only, so no issue, your insurance will cover for him.

It is an "educational" purpose when the child goes to another city to learn what the big city is all about? Insurance contracts are very specific as to the coverage provided "away from home" -- there must be verifiable enrollment in a program of vocational or educational instruction.

In many cases, it is best if the student obtains a renter's policy to cover personal property.
