Is flood insurance any different for the renters? The homeowner has it, but I don't think it'll cover my things.

NFIP allows renters to buy contents-only flood insurance policy. However, there is a cap of $100,000 on such insurance policies.

Just as your home owner's policy doesn't cover the renter's (your) content, his flood insurance coverage also won't be of any use to you.
You'll need your own content coverage for flood, which you can buy through NFIP. And as adamsarthur87 has pointed out, NFIP puts a cap on renter's content coverage.
