My 20 year old son is preparing to move out soon with his fiance' and I am considering allowing him to continue to drive our 2nd vehicle, with the intention to give him more time to save money. I am already paying the insurance and property taxes and plan on continuing to do so. But I am unsure of the legalities of him living somewhere else (same city, different address) while the vehicle is registered under my name and my address. Any advise would be helpful. BTW: KY registration. He is licensed.

He's must be scheduled on the policy for coverage, i.e be a listed driver. There should be no legal complications, if he is a regular user of your car. However, it's a probability that the insurer may deny coverage if he doesn't share residence. Might create an issue during renewals.

Insurance companies do not like to insure vehicles "garaged" at different locations under one policy. An exception is made for dependents who are away at college, and possibly while in the military. Your son needs his own policy showing the vehicle garaged at his own address.

If your son is old enough to get married and live on his own, then he's old enough to pay for insurance. Paying for his insurance is a "nice" thing to do, but it does little to teach him anything about personal responsibility. There's already too little of that left in America as it is.

Why don't you save the money for your retirement instead? Or are you expecting your son to pay for your retirement with the money he saves on auto insurance now?
