What documents should I submit with the insurance carrier to file a renters insurance claim? I'm with GEICO.

Below are the possible documents:

1) Copy of the police report (in case a crime has been committed).
2) File number in the police report.
3) Details of the damages and losses.

Check with a Geico representative for any specific format you need to follow.

This is one thing I see so many insureds doing....waiting before filing a claim because they think they need to have all the documents ahead of time. The thing to remember is that if something happens that you feel may be covered under your policy then file it.....now! Your claims representative will advise you of any documents needed and in the event of damages such as water or smoke will avise or arrange for vendors to begin mitigation to prevent further damages from occurring.

I have seen too many times (i.e. water damage) that the insured waits, tries to take care of it themselves, calls people to look at the damages to begin mitigation but then again waits and then after a few weeks they call their insurance company. Now the water damage which could of quickly been mitigated if they had only called right away has not turned into a mold job which the policy does not cover.

To keep from the above happening, file it right away and ask for help from your insurance carrier.

You need to provide copy of some of the documents given below:
List each item separately
Try to incorporate serial and item identification numbers
Describe the items in detail like size, color and manufacturer.
Estimate the cost of all items.
Provide an approximate date of purchase.
