My yearly homeowners’ insurance contract is about to expire next week on 30th October. I am planning to switch my carrier because most of the insurers provide low-cost insurance policies and later on increase their rates, citing people usually don’t like to switch. My roof is leaking and I want it to be replaced. Now, if I file a claim, then they will take more than two weeks to process it and there are chances of my claim getting rejected since I have switched companies. Is it really so? Or would it be better for me to wait till I completely switch off to a new carrier?

It should not change the coverage if you switch carriers. If you file the claim and change, the old carrier may then report the claim under a system call CLUE. When your new policy renews after a year, the new carrier may obtain that information and increase your rates.

Is your roof damaged or is it just old? Unless your roof was damaged by a covered peril, there is nothing for your insurance company to fix -- you are responsible for "maintenance" of your property.Add your comment
