Should you have diversified insurance carriers?

Our house and cars are insured with Nationwide for the last 30 years. It was very expensive and therefore a good friend of us told us about a local broker who had helped him secure a good deal on his insurance. When I called the broker, she told me that our overall quote would be $1500 less a year than what we had been paying all the years.

So we went ahead and took the apparently better course. Now, our house is covered by St Johns, our rider for jewelry by another - Burns & Wilcox, and Safeco is insuring the car. These are all legitimate and reputable carriers and not the familiar names whom we always curse.

I’m not sure whether I did the right thing or not, but has anyone had any good or bad experience with having diversified carriers?

Thanks.

There is no good or bad when it comes to insuring with the same or different insurance companies. As long as you have the protection you need at the price you can afford, you have the peace of mind that only insurance or lots of other money can provide.

I too work with a local agent but all my policies are with one carrier. I guess he advised me this because of combo discounts. But I guess I would not have any issues with having multiple carriers if the prices would be better in that way.

We’ve had our home and car insured with Safeco for many years. Safeco is a part of the Liberty Mutual Group. But I’m familiar with neither Burns & Wilcox nor St. Johns.

As long as my thinking is concerned, I always try to get feedback about the company in the first place and only proceed if I’m satisfied.
