If I own a home, is it that necessary to have a homeowner's insurance policy? If yes, what are the reasons to own it?

If you have a lien holder you'd be required to have insurance on the home.
Home owners insurance protect your home and personal property from sudden and accidental loss. What if your water heater breaks and floods your home? What if your cooking and catch the home on fire. What if a storm damages your roof.
The other part of a home owners policy is liability coverage. If you cause injury or damage to someone else's property. What if someone is in your home and trips and fall. You make not feel it was your fault (and it may not be) but they may sue you and how will you pay for your defense. This is the part that most people don't consider... it's not a question of you not being liable so you get to walk away... if someone sues you (because they don't like the way you looked at them) the home owners policy will provide a defense.
As always, only for covered perils.
